Both are gateways to Morocco, both have international airports, and both get recommended constantly online. But Marrakech and Agadir offer genuinely different trips — here's how to decide which one deserves your time.
If you want medina culture, souks, riads, and easy access to the desert and Atlas Mountains, base yourself in Marrakech. If you want beaches, surfing, a more relaxed pace, and a modern coastal town feel, base yourself in Agadir. Many travelers do both, splitting a trip between the two.
Marrakech is the Morocco most people picture — narrow medina alleys, the Jemaa el-Fnaa square, riads tucked behind unmarked doors, and souks selling everything from leather to lanterns. It's intense, atmospheric, and occasionally overwhelming, especially for first-time visitors.
It's also the best base for excursions: the Agafay Desert, Atlas Mountains, Ouzoud Falls, Ouarzazate, and even multi-day Sahara trips to Merzouga or Zagora all depart from here. If day trips and variety matter most to your itinerary, Marrakech wins easily.
Agadir feels like a different country compared to Marrakech — wide boulevards, a long sandy beach, and a much calmer rhythm. It was largely rebuilt after a 1960 earthquake, so it lacks an old medina of its own, but it makes up for it with direct beach access and proximity to Taghazout, one of Morocco's best-known surf towns.
It's the better choice for travelers who want to actually relax — lounging by the beach, a surf lesson in the morning, dinner by the water at night — without the sensory intensity of a big medina.

This is where the two cities diverge most. From Marrakech, you can reach the Agafay Desert in under an hour, Ouarzazate's kasbahs in a half-day, and the High Atlas mountain villages within easy reach. Multi-day Sahara trips to Merzouga or Zagora also depart from Marrakech.
From Agadir, your best day trip options are Taghazout's surf beaches, Paradise Valley's natural pools, and Tafraoute's painted rock landscapes further south. There's also a direct route to Essaouira from Agadir, similar in driving time to the Marrakech-Essaouira route.
Marrakech and Agadir are about 3 hours apart by private vehicle, making it entirely feasible to combine both — many travelers spend the first half of their trip in Marrakech and the second half unwinding on the coast in Agadir.
