Excursions
Marrakech might be the best-located city in Morocco for day trips — within a few hours' drive, you can reach deserts, mountains, waterfalls, and the Atlantic coast. Here's how to choose, with realistic timings for each.
Distance: ~30 km · Duration: Half-day or sunset trip · Best for: Limited time, families
The closest desert experience to Marrakech — stony "moonscape" terrain rather than sand dunes, but with the same camel rides, sunset views, and Berber tents. Ideal if you only have an afternoon to spare.
Distance: ~150 km · Duration: Full day · Best for: Nature, swimming, photography
Morocco's most impressive waterfall, cascading roughly 110 meters into a gorge full of Barbary macaques. The hike down to the pools is steep but manageable, and swimming below the falls in summer is a highlight.
Distance: ~180 km · Duration: Full day · Best for: Film fans, architecture lovers
A UNESCO-listed fortified village that's appeared in Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. The drive crosses the dramatic Tizi n'Tichka pass through the High Atlas, which is half the experience.
Distance: ~65 km · Duration: Full day · Best for: Hiking, mountain scenery
A Berber mountain village at the base of Mount Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak. Even a short walk through Imlil's terraced valleys offers some of the best mountain views accessible from Marrakech in a single day.
Distance: ~170 km · Duration: Full day (or overnight) · Best for: Coastal change of pace
A breezy, laid-back fishing port with a blue-and-white medina, fresh seafood, and a completely different atmosphere from Marrakech. It's a long-ish day trip — many travelers prefer staying one night to enjoy it without rushing back.
Distance: ~200 km · Duration: Full day or 2-day trip · Best for: Film studios, desert gateway towns
Home to Atlas Film Studios, where countless films and series have been shot. Often combined with Ait Benhaddou on the same route, or extended into a 2-day trip toward the desert.
Distance: ~70 km · Duration: Half-day to full-day · Best for: Swimming, easy hiking
Natural pools, palm groves, and mountain streams within easy reach of the city. Ourika Valley is the more popular option, with waterfalls and Berber villages reachable on a relaxed half-day trip.
| Trip | Distance | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Agafay Desert | 30 km | Half-day |
| Ourika Valley | 70 km | Half/full-day |
| Imlil & High Atlas | 65 km | Full-day |
| Ouzoud Falls | 150 km | Full-day |
| Essaouira | 170 km | Full-day / overnight |
| Ait Benhaddou | 180 km | Full-day |
| Ouarzazate | 200 km | Full-day / 2-day |
For trips beyond Ait Benhaddou or Ouarzazate, consider a 2-day format with an overnight stay — it turns a rushed there-and-back drive into a far more relaxed experience, especially if you want to push on to the Sahara.

The right day trip depends entirely on how much time you have and what you want to see. If you're short on time, Agafay or Ourika Valley deliver a lot in a half-day. If you have more flexibility, Ait Benhaddou and Essaouira reward the longer drive with genuinely different scenery.
