Agafay is technically a stony "moonscape" desert rather than sand dunes, but it delivers the visual drama — vast open plains, Atlas Mountains on the horizon, and excellent sunsets — within 30-45 minutes of Marrakech. It's the only option if you have less than a full day to spare, or want a sunset dinner experience without committing to an overnight trip.
The trade-off is obvious: no rolling sand dunes, and a shorter, more curated experience overall. It suits travelers who want a taste of the desert atmosphere without sacrificing days of their trip.
Zagora offers a meaningful step up — smaller sand dunes, a longer drive through the Draa Valley's palm groves and kasbahs, and a genuine overnight camp experience. At around 6 hours each way, it's typically done as a 2-day, 1-night trip.
It's a solid choice if you want camel trekking and a desert camp under the stars but can't justify the extra days needed to reach Merzouga's larger dunes.
Merzouga's Erg Chebbi dunes are what most people picture when they imagine the Sahara — towering golden dunes reaching up to 150 meters, with sunrise and sunset views that genuinely look unreal in photos. Getting there takes roughly 9 hours of driving each way, usually broken into a 3-day, 2-night trip via Ait Benhaddou and Dades Valley.
This is the trip worth the extra time if "seeing the real Sahara" is a priority for your visit to Morocco — but it requires committing several days of your itinerary.
Both Zagora and Merzouga trips typically include stops at Ait Benhaddou and the Dades Gorges along the way, turning the drive itself into part of the experience rather than just transit time.
